Back to School, Back to You: When to Check Your Fertility

August always has a certain feeling to it.

The days are still warm, but the rhythm shifts. School supplies start filling carts, calendars get a little more structured, and life begins to settle into a new season. Even if you don’t have kids heading back to class, there’s something about this time of year that naturally makes us pause and take stock.

And sometimes, in that pause, a quiet question comes up:

Where am I right now in my journey to grow my family?

At Caperton Fertility Institute, we want you to know something important from the start: there is no “right” timeline for building a family. But if fertility has been on your mind lately, this season can be a really meaningful moment to check in with yourself—and decide what you want your next step to be.

Fertility Doesn’t Follow a Calendar

We’re taught to think in milestones.

Graduate. Get married. Build a career. Buy a home. Have children.

But fertility doesn’t always line up neatly with the plans we imagined for ourselves.

Yes, age is one piece of the puzzle especially because egg quantity and quality naturally change over time. But it’s just one factor among many. Your overall reproductive health is shaped by a combination of things, including your medical history, hormone balance, ovarian reserve, sperm health, and the structure and function of the reproductive system.

That’s why two people with similar life timelines can have very different fertility experiences.

And it’s also why your story deserves to be looked at individually not compared to anyone else’s.

Thinking About Baby #2? This Season Can Bring Up Big Questions

Back-to-school time has a way of highlighting where we are in life.

For parents who already have a child and are hoping to grow their family, this season can bring up a lot of reflection. Maybe you’re watching your little one head into a new grade and thinking, we’re ready for another. Or maybe you’ve been trying for a while and it’s not happening the way it did before.

If getting pregnant the first time was relatively easy, it can be especially surprising when the second time feels different. This is known as secondary infertility, and it’s more common than many people realize.

And just as importantly it’s not something you should feel like you have to “push through” alone.

Your body can change over time. Hormones shift. Ovulation patterns can change. Sperm health can change. New medical factors can come into play. Even if your first pregnancy happened without difficulty, that doesn’t guarantee the same experience the next time.

If growing your family is taking longer than expected, it doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you and it doesn’t mean you should assume the answer is the same as before.

It just means it may be time for a closer look.

So When Is It Time to See a Fertility Specialist?

A lot of people wait longer than they need to because they’re unsure when to ask for help. Here’s a general guideline we share with patients:

  • If you’re under 35, consider an evaluation after 12 months of trying
  • If you’re 35 or older, consider an evaluation after 6 months of trying
  • If you’re 40 or older, or already aware of a fertility concern, it may be appropriate to come in sooner

There are also situations where it makes sense not to wait at all, including:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Endometriosis or suspected endometriosis
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Prior pelvic surgery or known reproductive conditions
  • Known sperm concerns

And here’s something we really want to emphasize: you don’t have to be actively struggling to come in.

Some of our patients simply want clarity. They want to understand what’s going on with their bodies before they make decisions about timing, family size, or next steps. That’s completely valid.

This season isn’t just for kids starting something new.

It can be for you, too.

Maybe your next step is finally scheduling that consultation you’ve been thinking about. Maybe it’s getting fertility testing done so you can stop wondering and start knowing. Maybe it’s exploring IVF, egg freezing, donor options, or just having a real conversation about what’s possible for you.

Or maybe it’s simply getting answers so you can breathe a little easier.

Whatever your path looks like, you deserve care that meets you where you are without pressure, judgment, or assumptions.
